The good:
-The price is great
-Well packaged, the box arrived quickly and had no damage from shipping
-Maple veneer looks fantastic
-Kit comes with basically everything you need to assemble the instrument
-Everything fits snug, no loose hardware after assembly
-The instructions were good
The less-good:
-Bridge seems to be mounted 1/4" too close, insufficient saddle travel to properly intonate the low string (.135 tuned to Bb)
-Fairly significant flat spot on the back of the neck (looks like from trying to remove an imperfection)
-Slight visible gap where the bottom of the neck meets the body (much less visible after finishing)
-Would've liked some of the scrap wood to test finishes on
Additional notes/comments:
-I will be replacing the bridge ASAP; it's not a good design and not meant for a thicker B string. That's not a complaint against the kit, just the reality of a product at this price point.
-The rest of the hardware is much better than the bridge. I'm still planning to replace most (if not all) of it down the road, but it's fine for the time being.
-The frets are mostly ok, but I feel like some are not fully seated or centered on the fretboard.
-The flat spot on the neck was basically a non-issue as I was going to spend some time thinning the neck down anyway (new to bass, used to thinner Jackson guitar necks)
Overall, I'm very happy with the value of this kit and am looking forward to my next one. You can make a pretty nice instrument with some hardware upgrades, a good setup and a proper finish.
